Bonda. A name to remember.

Who? is the answer that frequently follows mention of their name, well get comfy and let me Fill you in.

In the early 1960s Bondaglass was a leading brand of polyester fillers for vehicle repair and polyester resins for laminating with glass fibre. In those days the polyester filler was supplied as three products, a filler powder and resin to mix together to form a paste “the good old days.”

Bondaglass also introduced Bonda Rust Primer, an anti-corrosion primer. This became a leading anti-rust product and is still highly respected by the car restorer. Of its type it is among the best on the market. Other products were glass fibre for use in repairing cars, boats and many other articles around the home.

In 1973 Bondaglass joined with Vosschemie, a manufacture of similar quality products in Germany and throughout Europe. Bondaglass -Voss was founded.

Vosschemie expertise allowed Bondaglass to make further progress with polyester filler quality and introduce a more extensive range particularly for the car body repair industry.

G4 Damp Seal was also introduced from Vosschemie and while it is a very effective for sealing out damp it became a brand leading product as G4 Pond Sealant. Vosschemie has a wide range of products and many of these where introduced into the market. Bonda introduced an extremely successful range of two part and one-part Wood Fillers, in a range of wood colours. Bondaglass also introduced Bonda Décor Fill, a filler specially for the decorator. In 2018 Bondaglass had the good fortune to become part of the Rustins range of products.

For wood, vehicle, boat and pond, if you are building or restoring then chances are it will be a Bonda product you will be using.

How to clean a patio? 5 ways of cleaning a concrete patio

Cleaning patio tiles can feel like a major job. Fortunately one that can be done in no time. With these 5 ways your patio tiles will be shining in no time. And you enjoy a clean patio.

The cause of dirty patio tiles

As soon as the sun comes out, it is wonderful to sit in the garden. After a period of time, your patio tiles may be dirty and look dull. This is caused by dirt in the air, where soot and fine dust adhere to the tiles. The major causes are traffic on busy roads and industry. The deposits on your patio are difficult to prevent, but easy to solve. Would you like to enjoy the sun on a sparkling patio? Patio cleaning and sealing is a good job for the spring.

4 DIY ways of cleaning patio concrete

How to clean a patio

HG patio cleaner is the solution for cleaning (concrete) patio tiles effectively. On the internet, various tips are shared for cleaning your patio without a pressure washer. HG selected a random number of tips you can use to get going. Consider using the following patio cleaning  tools: a brush, soft household soap or sand. This is how to go about it:

1. Brush the dirt from your patio
Clean the patio tiles with a grout scraper, water and a tough, stiff brush. First clean the grout between the tiles with the scraper. Then take a bucket of warm water, throw it over the patio and scrub the garden tiles. Your patio is clean again. Remember that this is a tough job if you don’t use other tools or products.

2. Use soft household soap to clean dirty patio tiles
Add soft household soap for this second method of cleaning your patio. This is how you do it:

  • Fill a bucket with water and soft household soap. The number of litres of water is the same as the number of tablespoons of soft household soap.
  • Throw the mixture on your patio tiles and scrub with a stiff brush.
  • Leave to work for 30 minutes and rinse with clean water.

If it doesn’t work immediately, leave the soapy water to absorb overnight. Be careful: the tiles can become slippery with the soap.

3. Spray the patio clean with a high-pressure cleaner
Use a high-pressure jet cleaner to clean your patio tiles effortlessly. Work from left to right and from the top to the bottom. NB: depending on the type of tiles, the pressure of the high-pressure jet cleaner may damage your patio. Consider this before treating your patio tiles with a high-pressure jet cleaner.

4. Scrubbing with sand
Sand works like a natural sander. Spread sand over the tiles and throw some soapy water on top. Scrub your patio with a broom and scrub off the dirt. Sweep up the remaining sand and throw it away. If you don’t like a sandy patio, this method is not for you.

Remember your garden

Not all patio cleaning solutions are good for your garden. Avoid salt and vinegar. These products are absorbed by the soil and in high concentrations they affect the soil, your flowers and plants. This is a shame, because there are plenty of garden-friendly ways to clean your patio tiles.

All Hands On Deck….ing Oil

Spring is almost upon us (March 20th if you were wondering) and our thoughts turn toward warmer weather and the possibility of getting back out into the garden and enjoying that outdoor space we have been forced to gaze at through rain soaked windows, perhaps wondering if the lawnmower has survived the winter in the shed or whether you can tackle the back garden which resembles something last seen in The Black Panther movie, knowing that somewhere out there is that rather expensive decking you were so proud of, maybe under that rain filled planter with the straggly plant leaves in it and the over turned lawn chair.

We miss our outdoor spaces when we can’t use them, especially given the last few months, so now is the time to take a deep breath and venture out, tackling one job at a time will make it seem less daunting. For the outdoor decking and other outdoor wooden items like the shed or the fence, we have you covered.

Liberon have been wood care specialists for years and produce one of the best products you can buy to use on the wooden surfaces in your garden and outdoor spaces. Decking Oil.

Despite its name which is a bit of a misnomer, Decking Oil feeds, protects and enhances the natural beauty of old or new exterior timber decking. A highly water-resistant, UV-enhanced formula, it is perfect for reviving and restoring colour to weathered and greying decking, and is also suitable for use on fences, garden sheds, gates and hot tubs.

Easy to use, in fact Liberon have produced this helpful little video to demonstrate how to apply the oil.

The results will speak for themselves.

Decking Oil is available in 2.5 litre and 5 litre cans and three shades, Clear, Medium Oak and Teak.

You may have noticed the guy in the film used another product before applying the Decking Oil, he used Tough Clean Deck and Revive. An effective cleaner for old and dirty natural exterior wooden decking which has dulled and faded over time. Ideal for heavily soiled areas and to prepare decking for finishing it helps to remove black spotting caused by mould or lichen from most types of wood and helps to prevent the re-growth of fungi.

While not strictly necessary to use before applying the Decking Oil, the Tough Clean Deck and Revive will help bring back the wooden surface to where the Decking Oil will work its magic and make your decking look like it was new again.

Dettol, Protect yourself and your family.

For generations, the name Dettol has been synonymous with cleanliness and its ability to kill germs and viruses and keeping you healthy (on the outside at least), I remember as a small child falling over and skinning my knee and my grandma putting Dettol on the cuts and grazes to kill any chance of infection, I remember it hurt, a lot!

At the moment, we are poised on the edge of a global pandemic with the outbreak of the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19). Naturally people are worried as this virus is very infectious and very easy to spread and you may have read or seen in the various news outlets, people are once again turning to Dettol to help keep them safe, so much so that supplies of Dettol have become very hard to obtain

(I am using the word Dettol in the same way we use the word Hoover, Dettol is a brand name of many products, for the sake of clarity I am referring to Dettols disinfectant sprays when I use the word Dettol.)

The Dettol product being used the most at the moment is the Dettol Anti-Bacterial Surface Cleanser Spray.

Used around the home on most surfaces, it is food and child safe and will kill 99.9% of bacteria and viruses. From High Chairs to Toilet Seats, Bins to Fridges, if it will make you ill, Dettol will kill it.

One of the reasons that this particular Dettol spray is so hard to come by at the moment is the label also claims it will kill the Human Coronavirus. Now before you click on the links above and buy enough to bathe in, some clarification is in order, Yes, it will kill the Human Coronavirus, but this is not tested yet on the current COVID-19 Virus strain, it is too new and no one has had the opportunity as yet to test against it.

While it may not yet protect you against the COVID-19 virus, it will protect you from almost everything else.

The current medical advice given by the World Health Organisation and Medical Practitioners in the UK is to wash your hands in soap and water or use an alcohol based Hand Sanitiser gel, and also to disinfect surfaces you regularly come into contact with especially if used by multiple people and for that Dettol certainly has you covered with the Anti-Bacterial Surface Cleanser Spray.

Don’t Let Mould Creep Up On You This Winter!

As the mercury heads south for the winter, and the days get decidedly shorter, most of us start thinking about switching on the central heating for the first time in months. As those colder outer walls start to heat up, it becomes a prime breeding ground for mould.

Humidity and ambient moisture are food and drink for mould clusters and if you can actually see the mould tucked away in the corners of the room, then chances are there is a much larger colony hiding behind your wallpaper. Does the room have a (musty) smell, do you find your eyes water or itch and your nose starts to get runny when in the room? if you answer yes then it’s a very good chance you have mould.

Well don’t despair, with a little bit of effort and not a lot of cost, it is a problem you can easily tackle at home without calling in a professional.

Wykamol No More Mould Eradication Kit, contains all you need to rid yourself of mould but more importantly, stop it from regrowing.

The kit contains a pair of safety goggles to protect your eyes from splashes and a pair of disposable gloves to protect your hands, a sponge to wipe away the mould after using the MCS1 (Mould Clear Spray) to treat the surface of the affected areas. This ready to use mould treatment spray is fast acting, will protect your decorative finishes and does not stain the treated areas and comes in a handy 1 litre trigger spray bottle.

To stop the mould from regrowing again, Wykamol have included 2 bottles of MCS3 (Mould Clear Solution) paint additive. Dedicated paint that contains anti-mould properties can be costly but 1 bottle of the MCS3 paint additive will give anti-mould properties to up to 5 litres of ordinary emulsion paint in any colour. That means once you have treated the mould, you can paint over it with your favourite colour paint and can rest easy that the mould will not be coming back anytime soon.

To buy these items separately will cost you approx £35.00, the Wykamol Mould Eradication Kit is almost half that cost at £20.95 (Postage not included).

If do find signs of mould in your home, don’t despair, it is not a sign your home is dirty or neglected, mould will grow anywhere you have high humidity and or water vapour, that is why it is most common in bathrooms and kitchens and can be almost invisible until the clusters get big enough by which time your health is under threat.

So next time you notice a smudge in the corner of the bathroom ceiling or get an unexpected sneeze on entering a room, it might just be mould lurking, ready to pounce.

I mentioned at the beginning that steel wool is a very versatile product, below are some other uses for Steel Wool that you may not have thought of.

If you need to easily start a camp fire, touching Steel Wool to the terminals of a 9 volt battery will ignite the wool and produce a flame.

Packing Steel Wool in the gaps around pipes and conduits will form a barrier mice and other rodents cannot chew through.

If you find bathing your pet causes the drain to clog with washed off hair, putting Steel Wool in or around the plughole will catch the hair before it can clog the drain and you can just throw it away afterward.

An Engineer friend of mine fills an old tin can with Steel Wool and uses it as an improvised Soldering Iron rest, the Steel Wool holds the Iron upright when not being used and also cleans the solder off the iron when it is being used. No more burn marks in his work table.

I was a child of the 1970’s when most houses had a central fireplace in the living room and I have very fond memories of toasting crumpets on a long brass fork in the open fire with my grandparents on a Sunday afternoon.

Of course the reality is very much glossed over as you bask in the warm glow of nostalgia, open fires and wood burners actually took a fair amount of work to clean and maintain and if you are one of the few that still use or rely on open fires and wood burners in your homes today, you know how much effort is required.
