Happy New Year

I think I can happily speak for everyone when I say it will be good to see the back of 2020, a definite “Annus Horribilis” a phrase once used by Her Majesty in a Christmas Day broadcast after the fire that almost destroyed Windsor Castle a few years back.

For a lot of us, this year will be forever remembered sadly as we have lost friends and loved ones, gone too soon. To them, we will raise a glass at Midnight tonight.

New year is a time to look forward and let us hope that 2021 will bring a ray or two of sunshine on this bleak midwinter.

Stay safe and from all us at Homecare Essentials, have a very happy and prosperous New Year.

International Orders and Deliveries.

Due to the current changing situation with COVID 19 and the closure of international traffic from the UK and also with the current uncertainty over Brexit, we have taken the decision to suspend our international orders for the foreseeable future.

Once the situation improves and we can accurately measure the changes and impact that Brexit will have on overseas orders and the practicality of sending to our overseas customers, we will look at the resumption of international ordering again.

We have not taken this decision lightly and we would like to take this opportunity to thank all our overseas customers for your custom and here’s to hopefully the resumption of orders and deliveries to the EU in the New Year.

Royal Mail WISMO crisis as service overwhelmed

Along with many other small business retailers, we are being inundated with “Where is my order?” messages. This is so common in normal times that ‘Where is my order’ has an industry acronym – WISMO, and this year you’re likely to get more WISMO messages than ever before.

The problem is of course that despite taking on 33,000 Christmas workers to bolster their 110,000 permanent staff, Royal Mail have been working at Christmas levels since March and the deluge of online shopping hasn’t stopped for nine months. Now with Christmas coming, the normal Christmas rush is hitting on top of the pandemic online shopping and WISMO is inevitable due to delays.

We’ve already seen marketplaces extend delivery estimations with eBay telling buyers that their Royal Mail 48 could take up to five days to arrive instead of 2 days. Setting buyer’s expectations is the first way to cut down on WISMO and the second, if you use tracked services, is to make sure that your customers receive tracking information and can self serve by checking the status of their parcel themselves.

If you are a buyer and waiting to receive a parcel, our advice is to be patient and try to resist the temptation to deluge retailers, Royal Mail and other couriers with WISMO enquiries. Everyone in the ecommerce and delivery industry are working flat out and sadly all your enquiry is likely to do is take someone away from getting things moving rather than get you an immediate answer.

It’s time to accept that, for some, this Christmas there will be a missing present under the tree that’s not delivered on time. We’ve known for a long time that this would not be a normal Christmas so get yourself in the mindset of making do and accepting the inevitable. Royal Mail and other carriers are doing their utmost to deliver Christmas, and you can give yourself the best possible chance of receiving every delivery you want by shopping early – if you’ve not already done your Christmas shopping count this as a warning that now’s the time to do it, not four days before Christmas!

“Despite our best efforts, exhaustive planning and significant investment in extra resource, some customers may experience slightly longer delivery timescales than our usual service standards.

This is due to the exceptionally high volumes we are seeing, exacerbated by the coronavirus-related measures we have put in place in local mail centres and delivery offices.

In such cases, we always work hard to get back to providing our usual level of service as quickly as we can.”

Granite Gold is Back in Stock

After a journey of 3 months, 2 continents and 7,000+ miles, we received notice last night that the ship bearing our Granite Gold stock has finally docked.

Once the necessary customs clearances have been finalised, we are expecting the delivery to our warehouse early next week.

In anticipation of that joyous occasion, we have opened the stock on the website for pre-orders with a notice of dispatch from the 4th of December.

Given the current situation in the USA, we were not certain we would be able to procure the stock order for this quarter, needless to say, it came a nice surprise when we were notified the order had left port in Los Angeles and was happily chugging its way down the west coast of the American Continent toward the Panama Canal.

All the favourites are available to purchase so order now with confidence but don’t take too long, they tend to go pretty quickly when the word gets out.

Thank You For Your Support.

It’s been a long time coming but we are finally back online for website purchases.

Waaay back at the end of March when the lockdown was first announced that Sunday evening, we wondered how this would affect us. When we arrived in the office on the Monday morning, we found out.

Waiting to be processed were over five and a half thousand orders across our sales platforms, From 5pm the previous Friday to 8.30am Monday, we had taken almost 10 days worth of orders. We quickly realised, that was levels of orders we just could not cope with and we also realised no-one knew if any of our suppliers would be open for business or us for that matter. As it turned out as an internet only business, we were allowed to continue trading with just some minor adjustments for social distancing.

We took the unprecedented step of switching off the website for purchases and taking the orders manually over the telephone. This gave us the ability to regain some semblance of control over the situation and also to be able to confirm the availability of ordered products.

Fast forward a few weeks, as it transpired almost all of our suppliers stayed open so obtaining stock was not the issue we thought it would be *more on that later* Things were progressing pretty much as normal except the phones which never stopped ringing. As we were taking the customer orders manually over the telephone, we realised that volume had not slowed down, in fact it had increased by quite a large amount. Initially all the calls were for stock of anything anti-bacterial or anti-viral related cleaning products, needless to say, these vanished very quickly and as we soon discovered from our suppliers also.

As the lockdown went on and the improvements to the weather allowed people outside, the volume of orders switched from cleaning products to DIY products, Oils, wood stains, varnishes, waxes, we couldn’t get them fast enough. This was when we found out that while our suppliers had all been open for business and were happily supplying us with stock, it turns out it was their on hand inventory and no-one had been manufacturing replacement products to replace the items that were sold.

Fast forward a few more weeks, with every stock order we were placing, the lists of out of stock items was getting longer and longer and the shelves were getting more and more empty.

Then the light went on at the end of the tunnel. Things started to ease off and we started to get a few items that were previously unavailable again and slowly the shelves began to fill up enough that we finally felt secure enough to switch on the website again, 179 days since it was switched off.

The situation is still far from perfect, stock from certain suppliers is still very hit and miss and opening each stock delivery is very much a lottery as to what we have received over what was ordered so we have had to add a caveat to the web orders that your order may be subject to change or cancellation should the item or quantity not be readily available.

All of us at Homecare Essentials would like to send a huge thank you to each and every person who has ordered from us and keeps ordering from us since the pandemic. We wouldn’t be here now if it was not for you and your support over the last few months.
